My Journey in Dropshipping:  Mistakes That You should Avoid

How I Started Dropshipping ?

Some years ago, I was just like many aspiring entrepreneurs— that excited, clueless, and hoping to make money online. Then I came across dropshipping, and it felt like a dream: an online business with no need for inventory, no warehouse headaches, and the ability to work from anywhere.

Fast forward to today, I’ve built and scaled multiple stores, seen both massive successes and painful failures, and learned lessons that no YouTube tutorial can teach you . In this blog, I’ll share my real experiences—what worked, what didn’t, and how you can avoid these mistakes that I made.

Lesson 1: Picking the Right Niche is Everything

When I started, I made the rookie mistake of choosing a random product just because it looked cool. Big mistake. My first store flopped because I didn’t research on demand and competition.

What Works?

  • Solving a problem: Products that fix an issue or make someone’s life easier sell best.
  • Passion-driven niches: If you understand the audience, it’s easier to market.
  • Evergreen or trending? A mix of both works best—stable sales with potential viral products.

Example:

One of my best-selling products was a posture corrector. It was a pain-solving product, it had a broad audience, and it wasn’t easily available in local stores.

Lesson 2: Winning Products Are Found, Not Created

A common myth is that you need a “unique” product. The truth?  No, Successful dropshipping is about finding winning products, not inventing them.

How to Find Winning Products?

  • TikTok Trends: Search “TikTok Made Me Buy It” and see what’s going viral.
  • Facebook Ads Library: Spy on competitors’ ads and see what’s performing well.
  • AliExpress & CJ Dropshipping Sales Data: Look for products with consistent sales growth.

Example:

I once found a mini projector trending on  instagram for dropshipping. I tested it with a simple 5000rs ad budget and within two weeks, it generated 5,00000 in sales.

Lesson 3: Marketing is King (Especially Paid Ads)

Having the best product means nothing if no one sees it. Early on, I wasted thousands on Facebook ads without knowing what I was doing this is the major problem of dropshipping.

What Worked for Me?

  • Facebook & Instagram Ads: Still my #1 choice. Start with video ads and test multiple creatives.
  • TikTok Ads: Explosive results if your product is visually engaging.
  • UGC (User-Generated Content): Real people using the product = higher conversions.
  • Influencer Marketing: Pay micro-influencers for honest reviews—they convert better than polished ads.

Pro Tip:

Start small with a 2000rs/day ad budget, analyze performance, and scale only what’s working.

Lesson 4: Customer Service Can Make you or Break You

In my Journey of second year of dropshipping, I had a store making 50,000/month, but I ignored customer services. Refund requests piled up, deliveries were delayed, annoyed customers, and my PayPal account got limited.

What I Learned:

  • Fast Responses = Happy Customers. Use chatbots that help customers and virtual assistants for quick replies.
  • Clear Shipping Times. Be honest with your customer regarding delivery windows to avoid chargebacks.
  • Offer Hassle-Free Refunds. A smooth refund process builds trust and repeat customers.

Example:

Once, a customer complained about a defective product. Then Instead of arguing, I refunded them immediately. They left a positive review, and their friend later placed 3000 orders!

Lesson 5: Not Every Product is a Winner (But Testing is Key)

Dropshipping is a numbers game. Out of 10 products I test, only 2 or 3 turn into real winners.

How I Test Products:

  1. Run 5000 in Ads: If I don’t get sales, I move on.
  2. Analyze Metrics: If there are High clicks but no purchases? Then the product might not be so good.
  3. Optimize & Scale: If a product gets traction, I increase the budget and refine targeting.

Pro Tip:

Don’t get emotionally attached with your product. If it’s not selling, kill it fast and move to the next one.
